Rolling Stone Magazine was released on November 9, 1967, and the iconic image featured John Lennon in costume for the film “How I Won the War “on the cover.
Founded in San Francisco by Jann Wenner, a former student at the University of California at Berkeley, and Ralph Gleason, a jazz critic for the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper.
Jann Wenner explained in his opening letter that the magazine aimed to reflect the changes in rock ‘n’ roll and its cultural impact. With a blend of music reviews, interviews, and articles on artists like The Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd, Rolling Stone was more than just a music paper—it captured the attitudes surrounding the music. Over time, being featured on its cover became a symbol of success for many artists.
